There is alot of info. and interpretation, but here is the general gyst of it.

First of all, everyone thinks that the attack on pearl harbor was the start of it...nothing is further from the truth, the attack on Pearl Harbor was the beginning of the United States official involvement. World War II started when Hitler came to power in Germany and when Japan invaded Asia. So, what started wwii was that two empires decided to take over the world.

Hitler was voted into power in germany in a democratic election. Why? Because after WWI Germany was in a gigantic depression and the Germans were put under much strain...they wanted a leader who would put their pride back in them and give them a hope. Hitler was a charismatic leader who fooled the masses. After he was in power he disassembled the germans equal to congress and then he built a large war machine...he then started his continual conquest of europe...first it was austria, then poland in 1939, this is when England declared war on Germany.

When Japan invaded Asia, first manchuria then China and the south east to singapore We stayed out of the war other than supporting a small Force called the flying tigers...Japan new the inevitability of US involvement, so they decided to make a quick attempt of destroying our Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. Fortunately, our aircraft carriers were not in the harbor at that time, which has led to speculation of Roosevelts knowledge of the attack, Anywho, after the attack the famous quote came "we awoke a sleeping giant" which was entirely true, The US had a standoff policy in foreign affairs until this time.

After these events WWII was an official war...and because of the many mistakes of axis, chance and fortune on the allies side we won the war for a list of some of these check out...http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ak0Q45q96YVELSM6bX7z8l_sy6IX?qid=20061107110454AAArPTa&show=7#profile-info-cf2a07930825655efc7c9c16114b7901aa

World War 2 was started by Adolf Hitler. His ambition was to be the first person to rule the world. His motto, repeated over and over was." Heute gehert uns Deutchland, Morgan die ganse welt "which means- - - today Germany belongs to us, tomorrow the whole world.
This was right in the world's greatest depression. People all over were starving, and saw little hope for the future. The German people went along with Hitler and his dream. Hitler built up a very powerful army, navy, and air force.
Then he began to demand land surrounding Germany, The Polish Corridor, Moravia, Bohemia, and other parcels. At first the nations of Europe thought it would be better to let him take a few pieces of land that to go to war against him.
In September of 1938 Hitler sent his air force into Poland. He demanded the entire country. At that time everybody realized that he wanted it all, so England and France declaired war on him.
America remained out of the war. Germany succeeded in taking all of France. America sent planes, ships, ammunition, and food to England.
Hitler knew that he had a problem with American supplies going to England, so he and his buddies, the Japanese arranged for a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. That brought America into the war. With America production and fighting spirit, the English and Russian armies, it was only a matter of time 'till Germany and Japan were defeated.
That's where Rosie came in. My mother's name was not Rosie, but she rivited many airplanes. I was at Pearl Harbor during the attack, came back, got a commission, and fought all the way across Europe 'till we met the Russians coming the other way.

I note here that many focus on the European war...

Lets remember that Japan had annexed Korea and Manchuria (current Northern China). Japan then invaded CHINA on July 7th 1937... almost two years before Hitler invaded Poland on September 1st 1939.

Hitlers invasion of Poland brings France and Britain into the war due to their treaty with Poland.

Hitler's invation of Russia in June 22nd 1941 brings Russia into the war against the Germans.

Japan's attack against Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 brings the United States into the war against Japan.

Germany declares war against the United States on December 11th 1941 in support of their Alliance with Japan and Italy.

What was it ABOUT ?? Economic expansion... Germany, Italy, and Japan wanted to become world powers... they wanted more room, more raw materials, and more money. The genocide was just a side-effect of the root cause.
