At one time all phone numbers started with 2 or 3 letters before the numbers. Even though that is no longer the case, many companies spell out their name as their phone number.

dual_reality is almost right. The letters are for the first two digits of the prefixes (the first three digits of your present phone number) not the area code. The phone company found that people could remember names easier than numbers, so they made up names to help people remember the prefixes when they expanded phone numbers. I think they went to 7 from 5 and didn't bother with just 6 digits. When I was a kid, my phone number started with HOpkins (the phone company always capitalized the two letters to indicate they were the first two digits). It was years before I started saying the numbers 46 instead of HOpkins.

Sometimes you may need to punch in a product code or for insurance claims. It is easier to use than numbers and there are more variables if letters and numbers are used.
