How many have heard of brides & grooms smashing wedding cake in each other's faces instead of feeding each other bites?

I keep seeing references to this; is it a regional behavior? Who does this, and where?

Thanks for any information about this baffling custom!

Yes, I have seen and heard of this. I think it was more popular in the 70's than now. I think it started as "oh, how cute a bit of frosting on the bride/grooms nose" to getting out of control. Most people find it rude and offensive now. I think it is more of a "tacky, white trash" sort of custom for those who still do it.

It used to be a big "Smash" out here on the West Coast.

As a mobile DJ, I used to see about 50% of the couples smash cake into each other's faces, back in the mid-80's.

Nowadays, I only see perhaps 1/10 of couples doing this tacky "tradition."

Part of the "solution" is for me, the mobile DJ-emcee, to encourage the Newlyweds by making an announcent that the couple "are going to be nice".

20 years ago, it was more common for DJ's to encourage a "food fight." (Not me: I always thought the cake smashing people were "Trailer Trash")

Well I have def been to some weddings where they do that, I live here in the US, New Mexico. And people do it here, I think its a United States thing, but the most recent weddings I've been too haven't done it, if anything the groom lightly puts a dab of frosting on the brides nose and kisses it off of her!!! I think that is kinda cute.

It's pretty common in New England to do a LITTLE smudge of cake on each others faces. But a word to grooms.... if you think your bride will like having her expensive make up ruined by an over-zealous smudge, think again!

It depends on the couple. My husband and I are very flirtatious (all the time) and this is the kind of stuff we would do on a normal basis. We're silly and like to have fun so it came natural to "attack" each other with cake. It was really cute in the video and anyone who knew us expected no less. Just be careful about getting cake on your dress!

It is something funny that couples do...however, I always tell them not to, but sometimes it happens anyways. It has become like a bouquet toss or the garter toss...just another thing that happens.

I'm from Maryland and I don't know anyone who did this at their wedding reception! In my opinion doing so is extremely rude and childish!

Most of the couples you see doing this are probably first cousins, if that gives you a clue.
