Mankind needed to understand his world: its creation, its purpose and his relationship to it...and then be able to tell others about his interpretations. He learned how to make symbolic marks (visual arts), attribute vocal utterances to them and evolve that language of pictures to what we call art. The sophistication continues today and art now encompasses the making of pictures, their many styles, and the reverence and the collection of them.
