Law Enforcement Personnel, this question is directed to you since you are intimate with each term. Thanks.

Occassionally, I hear the two terms on TV, movies and radio, but I don't understand the difference between them. Even associations use the term "peace officer" in their names, e.g., California Peace Officers Association (am not certain this entity exists).

Peace officer is a broad term for a group of people whos duties are to maintain order in the community. These men and women include police officers, court officers, corrections officers and sheriffs/marshals etc. Police officers are just one of the groups of people who are classified as 'Peace Officers'.

Our state (NH) seems to use police officer, peace officer and law enforcment officer interchangably. Without knowing the state, I would only be able to assume the same thing.

I believe peace officers aren't armed and are not authorized to use deadly force
