Did you know they actually send some of their Jesuit priests to school so that they can have both, an education in religion and an education in science? They actually have at least 2 telescopes run by Jesuit scientists.

There's more to it than that even. The Jesuit Observatory has at times served as a central organizing agency for international efforts. They provide information to particle physicists to test various theories about cosmology.

In short, the Vatican is not afraid of Science. The Vatican recognizes that Science and Religion can never conflict because they are both the search for the truth. Where Science and Religion appear to conflict, there is a reason, and that reason is usually simply a misunderstanding of one or the other's results.

Truth cannot contradict Truth.

of course, this means the Vatican is slowly helping to write religion entirely off the books since it's not true but... hey. Proves they're committed to the Truth no matter what.

This goes back to the days of Galileo. It makes perfect sense to me - shouldn't the Vatican be studying "the heavens"? Ever notice that some of the names of the lunar craters are the same as some of the early Vatican astronomers? Now you know why!
