The biggest thing is to keep them doing something other than eating. Games, books, video games, crafts, hobbies, etc are better than sitting and eating. Make some simple rules.

No eating while watching TV, reading, computer, etc.

No soft drinks (we limit our kids to one soda a week!).

No seconds on desserts.

These aren't really that onerous and should be a big help.

Find activities they can do inside. Martial arts are great and can be practiced at home between classes.

This is tough. My granddaughter has gained about 30 lbs in 2 years. She is 9. She was slim and now she is chubby and very food preoccupied.

Our pantry is pretty clear of snack food because of my husbands diabetes. But purging the pantry is the number one way to help.

Maybe 5 or 6 SMALL meals a day to avoid getting hungry. When she is with me we try to be as active as possible. We take a two mile walk each night and work in the yard.

I do sympathize, it is hard.

Get him/her involved in an indoor sports team, maybe like ice hockey for youth. And there's no reason why children can't be in the cold...I run in the snow. But if they need to be indoors, check with local gyms and see if they have any classes especially for kids.

First of all----YOU are the parent and YOU should control what and how much the child eats. If they need to lose weight....that means you are doing anything to control their poor eating habits. Start feeding them correctly. Smaller portions, healthier choices, no fast/junk foods and no sodas. And just because it's winter, they can still go out and play.

This time of year is hard on anyone since the Holidays are here with us again.
I buy juices and healthy snacks for them when my kids come.
I am sure you can still purchase kids exercise videos or DVD's.
Or you can make up a simple routeen with music.
good luck

Chase them with a baseball bat. Not only will they keep occupied, but they won't hae time to eat, they will be too busy running from you. Additionall the both of you will be in great cardiovascular shape. How is this not a win win!
