The biggest thing is to keep them doing something other than eating. Games, books, video games, crafts, hobbies, etc are better than sitting and eating. Make some simple rules.
No eating while watching TV, reading, computer, etc.
No soft drinks (we limit our kids to one soda a week!).
No seconds on desserts.
These aren't really that onerous and should be a big help.
Find activities they can do inside. Martial arts are great and can be practiced at home between classes.

pay attention to diet,,,, while not taking away any one thing,,,,,,, have healthy snacks available,,,,,, also do a fitness program,,,,,say for a half hour a day,,,,, even split into smaller segements, jogging around the house,,,, playing musical chairs with the chairs spaced out,,,,, jumping up and down or dancing during tv commercials,,,,,,,putting on a cd or dance movie and dancing along,,,,,etc are all fun ways to include exercise within a childs day,,,,,,,,,,one way to encourage them to eat healthy is to make a special dessert, once a week,,,, that they are involved in,,, with the selection and the cooking or purchasing of it,,,,,,then during the rest of the week, you can include new or not often eaten things for them, and cut back on snacks/candy etc,,,,
