i flew emirates this summer and they were very lenient with the weight of the luggage. when i fly other airlines, i usually have to pay extra or abandon some stuff.......emirates is amazing and will probably not make you pay if u are within 5 -10 pounds over the weight limit.

Hello there, first of all, well done in chooing Emirates, they are one of the best airlines to travel with in terms of service, leg-room and on-board entertainment.

The USA works on the "Piece Concept or PC" for baggage allowances.
Here are the baggage allowances on Emirates to The USA
Economy Class:
Two checked bags (pieces). The total of the three dimensions not to exceed 158 cm (62 inches) per bag provided that the overall dimensions of the two pieces shall not exceed 273 cm (107 inches) and the weight not to exceed 23kgs/50lbs per bag (piece).

Business Class
Same as First Class baggage allowance

First Class:
Two checked bags (pieces). The total of the three dimensions must not exceed 158 cm (62 inches) for each bag (piece) and weight not to exceed 32kgs/70lbs per bag (piece).

Note 1: Allowed weight per piece in Economy class is 23kgs/50lbs with the exception between Japan and USA / US territories where the bags may weigh up to 32Kgs (70lbs) in all classes.

Note 2: Between Canada and Brazil / Japan / China / South Korea / Hong Kong / Brunei / Cambodia / Macau / Malaysia / Myanmar / North Korea / Singapore /Thailand / Vietnam, the baggage allowance will be the same as two bags (pieces) upto a maximum of 32kgs (70lbs) in all classes (F/J/Y).

Note 3: Additional to the infant free baggage allowance in all three classes, one checked or carry-on fully collapsible stroller/pushchair or infant's carrying basket or infant's car seat, may be carried in the passenger cabin subject to availability of space.

Note 4: On EK services from India (BOM/HYD/MAA/CCU/COK/DEL/TRV) to/from JFK via DXB, the total weight permitted on Free Baggage Allowance on each piece is 32kgs/70lbs. The total of the three dimensions must not exceed 158 cm/62 inches for each piece. This applies to all three classes F/J/Y. This allowance is only available for travel originating in India on a ticket issued in India.

Baggage Weight Restrictions:
Dubai Civil Aviation prohibits the acceptance of bags that weigh more than 32kgs per single piece, into or out of or via Dubai International Airport. This, however, does not affect the free baggage allowance, but helps in better distribution of weight.

This restriction, due to health and safety reasons, is also imposed at other airports, by either the airport authorities or by the ground handling companies. On the Emirates network these restrictions are imposed at Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane), Mauritius, United Kingdom (Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester), Sri Lanka (Colombo), New Zealand (Auckland and Christchurch), South Africa (Johannesburg), Cyprus (Larnaca), Malta, Qatar (Doha), Seychelles, and Oman (Muscat).

All of this is of course in addition to your hand baggae allowance too- so there is quite a bit of scope there for error.

I hope this helps you.
Good luck :-)
