The biggest sources of pollution is run off from land, discharges from sewage treatment works and factory discharges.

Run off is caused where rain and surface water pick up farm contaminates such as animal slurry and fertiliser and carry it into rivers and water courses. Also where the same run off picks up pollution from the streets and factory lands in the same way. To prevent it you have to either stop the water getting to the water course, catch it and treat it or use a natural reed bed of enough size to do it naturally.

Sewage treatment outflow is a tremendous polluter. Most take out the majority of pollutants but the biggest and most harm full in many ways is phosphate which is rarely screened out. The solution is to put the outflow through phosphate strippers before it is discharged.

Pollution from factories is usually from negligence and accidents in the developed world. There is not an easy solution to this but laying the full cost at the polluters door followed by punitive court fines and actions against company directors appears to be the best deterrent to this.

One of the major things is to neutralize everything to salt. Example HCL is bad but if u add caustic soda u can have 2 bad things become salt water. This happens in nature the rotting plants are acid the soil is normally basic.
