In classical artwork (Renaissance era especially) there is something called 'the golden rule' that artists used to help them make the perfect composition. It is based on Maths. Draw a straight line from top corner to opposite bottom corner of the canvas. Then using a compass draw a semicircle from bottom corner as the centre up to the line you drew earier. Where they intersect is where to put the focal point of the painting.
