The age varies from vet to vet. Each person is going to have a point at which they are more comfortable putting the dog under anestesia. So you should ask the vet that you are going to use what age or weight he would like to neuter your pet.

My Vet recommends six mos old though animal shelters routinely do it an very early ages.
This site has reasons to neuter your dog at six mos. and although I don't agree that all dogs need to be purebred to have puppies, it has a good explanation about neutering timing.

Years ago, my vet did it at 6 months, but now they do it at 4 months. I think it varies from vet to vet as to the age considered acceptable. I wouldn't do it under 4 months tho if you don't have to. Pups too young to be going under if it's not immediately needed.

my dog was neutered at 2 months and he has the best temperment.
