I find it strange that the only people to answer this question so far are white. I my self do not like when people pronounce it "ax" I feel it is lazy and separates people. Language can bring us together or it can drive us apart. The urban ghetto method of pronunciation maybe cool in that world. But it separates them from advancing in the modern world.

I don't think it's difficult at all. The only words that I have trouble with are ones that are spelled the same in English and French because I never know which way to say them.
I remember watching Dr. Phil one day and one of the guests was mispronouncing the word ask. Dr. Phil kept on repeating it back to them trying to teach them how to properly pronounce it. It didn't work... he eventually gave up. I found it pretty funny though.

I've thought about this. It's not that it is HARD to pronounce it, but a lot of black people just grew up hearing their dumb parents say it that way, and it's almost like an accent to them- hard to drop.
One of the most glaring examples is in Ice Cube's song "It was a Good Day"- he "axes" his friends (the poor fellows) at "what time, are they playin' bASKetball"- so, he CAN say the word ask in basketball, but sees the word ask as properly pronounced AXE.

I can say ask, I just can't say conscience, conscious or unconscious, or conscientious, etc. People are just trying to be cool by saying aks....or else they're watching too much Futurama.
BTW- we were always taught in school that the first R in February is silent. Damn redneck teachers.

It's just mispronunciation plain and simple. Usually done by people who are ACTING plain and simple.
Anyone who's attended any kind of school or been taught to speak properly can handle it...
I mean really...how hard is it to say ask, for god's sake.
It's kinda like that deaf and death thing...I have an in-law that I want to strangle every so often because he says death for deaf. Ignoramus.

Pure laziness.
The same reason why most people I've met leave out the "r" in February.
And pronounce "Wednesday" as "Wenz-day".

No it isn't. They were just never taught the proper way to say the word.
