It's not just that God spoke to these prophets, but they saw him. You can't ask what is different between Mormons and Christian, because Mormons are Christians, but you can ask what do the Mormons believe that most mainstream Christian religions do not? The main items are:

Mormons don't believe in the Trinity in the Catholic sense. They believe God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are separate and distinct beings.

Mormons believe God continues to provide revelation and speak through prophets as he did in Biblical times (God is unchanging).

Mormons believe in a more personal judgement after the resurrection, meaning we will be judged according to our actions and faith and receive a particular amount of glory accordingly, whereas most mainstream Christians believe in only a heaven and a hell. (The Mormon belief makes sense to me because I believe God is both merciful and just. If he is just, and he has given us commandments, he would be a biased and changing person if he did not apply the penalty to the law).

Mormons believe the priesthood that God bestowed upon his disciples in the Bible was restored to the earth through the prophet Joseph Smith, and by this power what is sealed on this earth is sealed in heaven.

Mormons believe in the Bible and the Book of Mormon as complimentary texts. Both are written by prophets and followers and both provide testimonies of Christ, his teachings and his purpose. The Book of Mormon does not replace the Bible and is not the Bible. Again, logically, is there any reason God would only speak to one group of people? Did he only care about those in the Middle East? I would bet again, that if God loves all mankind he would make sure everyone knew of the great life of Christ. (People often quote Revelations wherein it states nothing should be added to or taken away, but this was actually written far before many of the books in the Bible; Revelations was not the last book written).

Mormons believe in Temples as did the prophets of the Old Testament.

Mormons believe in tithing as was taught in the Bible.

Mormons believe in baptism as was taught in the Bible, which is done by immersion (as the word "baptism" means).

Mormons believe they should not judge as should all Christians (although some on both sides fail to act accordingly).

I could go on, but you should just read the Bible, and you'll pretty much have what Mormons believe. And, if you want further clarity you can read the Book of Mormon, together with the words of God's prophets.

Now, if you don't believe in God or religion in general, then I guess there is no convincing you either way. For myself, it took much searching, much study and education, much contemplation, much faith, much prayer, and then finally listening to God when he spoke to me.

Good luck.

Arion, May this "Mormon" take a shot at your question?

The short answer is that all "Mormons" are Christians. In English, the word Christian means one who believes Jesus is the Christ (or the Messiah), and that the Holy Bible is scripture. Thus, "Mormons" (more properly members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) are Christians.

You probably meant to ask the difference between Mormons and OTHER Christians. May I focus on just one, which is my response to your other question:

Why do people believe them?

Why do I believe the story of Joseph Smith, who (as you noted) went into the woods to pray about which church to join?

I believe it because I have carefully and prayerfully studied the Book of Mormon, and determined it to be the Word of God. Since I know that, then it necessarily follows that Joseph Smith (who brought forth that book) is a prophet. If he's a prophet, then the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true.

If The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true, then it is what every Bible-believing Christian should eagerly await -- the "restoration of all things" promised in the Bible.

That claim deserves careful, serious investigation. It frankly does NOT deserve the sort of silly attacks gratuitously posted here, allegedly in “answer” to your question. For example, one poster tells us there cannot be any additional scripture (like the Book of Mormon) because the Book of Revelations says one should not add to that text. That's misleading and dissembling, since after John wrote his Revelation, he pick up his pen and wrote the gospel of John. That's right, if the Bible were arranged in the order the books were written, the last directive in that holy book would be this:

“And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written.”

Yep, the very last words penned in the Bible are actually an encouragement, a hope, that additional scripture would come forth, telling of other things that Jesus did. The Book of Mormon does exactly that, telling of Jesus’ dealings with another group of people. Yet it remains the one book that people feel they do not have to read before they render an opinion!

I am reminded of Hodgson’s Test:

"What serious and intelligent persons over many generations, and in preference to many available alternatives, have held to be significant, rarely turns out, on close investigation, to be trivial."

I invite you to do what I did during my college years. Carefully investigate, as 13 Million members world-wide have already.

I did, and it is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Mormons believe that their ancestors were Iraelites who fled to America on ship in the early centuries to escape the Caaniites. They insist that when they arrived they split into two groups, the Nephites, and the Lamanites. The Nephites were civilized, and the Lamanites were savages. They suggest that the Nephites attacked and killed all the Lamanites and the only one left was Mormon, whse son Moroni wrote the plates, that the founder Jospeh Smith found.

The Mormons also believe that the large hilly mounds found all over America were made by their Lamanite ancestors, and that the Native Americans of North America are ancestors of the Nephites.

***Modern science had infact proven that the plates Smith found and the mounds are all direct objecs of a historically documented Native people who had existed in North America in earlier periods and had built empires like the Aztecs and had practiced metalurgy.

The two religions are nothing alike, although the Mormon principles are in some ways similiar

Mormons believe Jesus Christ is real and the savior of the world.

Christians believe that Jesus Christ is real and the savior of the world.

Mormons believe that the authority of the priesthood has to come from God by the laying on of hands (Joseph Smith had angels do this for him)

Christians believe that priesthood authority comes from an intense feeling of being called by God to serve others in a priesthood capacity.

Both sides have rather dicey pasts of repression and abuse.

There is no difference in the sense of the term. Mormons are Christians, however, Christians aren't necessarily Mormons. Mormons believe in Christ as the Savior of the world, just as any other faith that would be considered Christians do.

Mormons believe themselves to be Christians, but in truth, they are not. They believe Joseph Smith to be a prophet, having "received tablets" that dictated an addition to the Bible, which they call "The Book of Mormon."

The Apostle John warned about such occurrences in the book of Revelation. In Chapter 22, verse 18, John wrote (under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit): "For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book."

The Mormons also hold several other beliefs that are unbiblical such as baptism of the dead, the potential of elevation to godhood, (remember, that belief is what caused Lucifer to fall), and two beliefs that they now (at least, superficially) shun: polygamy (yes, polygamy occurred in the Bible, but God never sanctioned it) and the regard of Blacks as a "cursed race" unworthy of salvation.

Dear Mormons, you believe that God the Father was a man before becoming God and do not accept the triunity of God, so you are preaching a FALSE GOSPEL. Preachers and believers of False Gospels are on the wide road to eternal torment.

Almighty God was, is and will always be triune (one God in three persons, not three gods). God is comprised of the Father, the Son (Lord Jesus) and the Holy Spirit, each serving a function. There is only one God (Isa 43:10-11; 44:6,8; 45:21-22; 46:9; John 17:3; 1 John 5:20-21). The Father is God (1 Peter 1:2; Philippians 2:11), the Lord Jesus Christ is God (Matthew 1:23; John 1:1; 20:28; Hebrews 1:8; Hebrews 13:8; Revelation 1:7-8; 2 Peter 1:1; Titus 2:13) and the Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4; Acts 28:25-27; 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 2 Corinthians 3:17).

Since Christianity began there were always souls on the earth who belonged to Christ and had worshiped and fellowshipped together. THERE WAS NEVER A NEED FOR ANY PARTICULAR BUILDING OR FOR RESTORATION. The Church has always been a spiritual body of souls belonging to Lord Jesus Christ who is the head of that body (Colossians 1:18; Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 4:15-16). It's good to worship and fellowship with believers and help and edify one another in love. Church is not made of earthly material.

Mormons, you hold in your temples rituals largely borrowed from Free Masonry, trust in "blessed" clothing for protection, believe the lie that women should not be allowed any position of authority in the Church and embrace the false doctrine of Christians being required to tithe.

IT IS VITAL TO OUR SALVATION THAT WE BELIEVE AND PREACH GOD’S TRUE AND UNCORRUPTED GOSPEL (GALATIANS 1:8).

IN THE BOOK OF MORMON AND OTHER LDS DOCTRINES, THERE ARE SEVERAL CONTRADICTIONS WITH THE BIBLE AS WELL AS WITH OBJECTIVE FACTS.

MORMON DOCTRINES VERSES THE BIBLE

THE BIBLE TELLS US THE CHURCH BEGAN IN 33 AD (MT 16:18 ACTS 2)
The Book of Mormon says the Church began in 147 BC, (Mosiah 18:17)

IN THE BIBLE, "DISCIPLES WERE FIRST CALLED CHRISTIANS IN ANTIOCH" 40 AD, (ACTS 11:26)
Alma 46:13-16 supposedly written in 73 BC refers to Nephites as Christians

THE BIBLE SAYS JESUS IS THE ONLY HEAD OF THE CHURCH (COL 1:18)
Joseph Smith is head of Mormon church because Mormons trust in Smith’s false doctrines (D&C 28:2-6)

THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT CHRIST BROUGHT END TO AARONIC PRIESTHOOD AND IS THE ONLY HIGH PRIEST AFTER MANNER OF MELCHIZEDEK. (HEB 5:9; II TIM 2:2)
LDS teach only they have authority to baptize, ordain, etc - have two-part system of priesthood - Melchizedek and Aaronic

THE BIBLE REVEALS THAT WE ARE SPIRITUALLY DEAD UNTIL OUR SPIRITUAL REBIRTH. (I PET 1:23; II COR 5:17)
According to Mormon teachings, baptism into LDS Church is how persons are born again

THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT JESUS WAS BORN IN BETHLEHEM WHICH IS ABOUT 10 KM SOUTH OF JERUSALEM (MT 2:1 + MT 21:17)
The Book of Mormon says "He shall be born of Mary at Jerusalem" (Alma 7:10)

IN THE BIBLE IT SAYS THAT THERE WERE 3 HOURS OF DARKNESS AT CRUCIFIXION (LK 23:44)
The Book of Mormon says there were 3 days of darkness at crucifixion (Hel 14:20-27)

THE BIBLE CLEARLY STATES THAT GOD IS SPIRIT WITHOUT FLESH &BONES (JN 4:24; LK 24:39)
Mormon doctrines teach that God has flesh and bones like man: (D&C 130:22)

THE BIBLE TEACHES THERE IS NO PRE-EXISTENCE OF THE SOUL - GOD CREATED OUR BODY, SOUL AND SPIRIT (ZECH 12:1; PS 139:13-16)
Mormon doctrines teach that everyone pre-existed - we all exist eternally

ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE, THERE IS NO MARRIAGE IN HEAVEN (MATTHEW 22:30)
LDS doctrines claim the ability to bear children in Heaven and the must of having a Temple Marriage

THE BIBLE SAYS MARY WAS ". . . WITH CHILD OF THE HOLY GHOST." (MATT 1:18)
LDS believe God, as a resurrected, physical man, is literal Father of Jesus - same manner in which men are conceived on earth

BOOK OF MORMON VERSES FACTS

BOOK OF MORMON: Native Americans wrote many official records (Hel 3:13), scrolls (Mor 5:23) and other writings (Mor 9:2; 2 Nephi 9:18)

SCIENTIFIC AND HISTORICAL FACT: Native Americans never wrote books but used simple pictures to communicate

BOOK OF MORMON: Native Americans are descended from Jews

SCIENTIFIC AND HISTORICAL FACT: Being "mongoloid", they are descended from East Asia

BOOK OF MORMON: God cursed Native Americans with dark skin. Anyone who marries a Native American shall get dark skin too (2 Nephi 5:21-23; Jacob 3:3-9; Mormon 5:15-17; Alma 3:6-10)

SCIENTIFIC AND HISTORICAL FACT: If this were true, there would be no part Native Americans, only full-blooded Native Americans. The statement is genetically false

BOOK OF MORMON: When Native Americans accept Mormon teachings they will become, "white and delightsome people" (2 Nephi 30:5-7; 3 Nephi2:15)

SCIENTIFIC AND HISTORICAL FACT: This is white supremacist racism and implies a correlation between skin colour and righteousness (at one time, Mormons wouldn't baptize Negroes)

BOOK OF MORMON: Horses, cows, oxen & asses were all native to North America (1 Nephi18:25)

SCIENTIFIC AND HISTORICAL FACT: Horses, cows, oxen & asses were all introduced to North America by European settlers

6 Reasons the Mormon Church’s structure is not like the early Christian church
1. There were more than 12 Apostles in the early church
2. Once a foundation is built, it no longer needs to be rebuilt
3. The LDS Church’s organizational structure is backward when it places Prophets over Apostles. God set Apostles to be first in the Church OVER Prophets
4. The position of “Seventy” did not exist in the early church
5. The office of “Priests” did not exist in the early church
6. Deacons were not 12 year old boys in the early church

In the Mormon Church there are symbols and temple rituals borrowed largely from Freemasonry. This is because the founder, Joseph Smith was a Freemason (this is common knowledge). His doctrines therefore cannot be trusted.

REDEMPTION BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH

Because mankind is incapable of meeting God’s standard of perfection necessary to abide in God’s presence (Romans 3:19-20,23), God sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay the total debt for the believer’s sins and mercifully credits to his account Christ’s righteousness (Romans 3:21-28,5:1-11; 2 Corinthians 5:18-21). Jesus’ gracious act of atonement was complete and covers all sin (Colossians 2:13-14; 1 John 1:9). Salvation is not based on good deeds but according to the mercy of God (Titus 3:4-5). Believers are justified by faith; it is a gift by God’s grace (Romans 4:3-8; Ephesians 2:8-9). A true, living faith will result in a desire to live a holy, loving life of good works (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:6; James 2:14-26), but failure to be absolutely successful at righteous living does not negate the believer’s justified status.
