I've had a bad experience with an extraction with another dentist a long time ago.
Now, I went to this quack yesterday, and he ended up hurting me.
The tooth is abcessed, I'm pregnant, and I'm worried that my dentist isn't going to be able to get it numb completely. Obviously, i don't want to get the tooth pulled if it's going to hurt.
It's a bicuspid #12.
I have to be there in an hour and a half, and I feel like I'm walking to a guillotine. Help!

First, and most important, please see an Oral Surgeon, NOT a general dentist. An Oral Surgeon has 4 years advanced training in surgery that includes extracting teeth. A bicuspid is a very easy extraction. Oral Surgeons also can give certain injections (Division 2 block) that will absolutely get you numb and you won't feel anything. If the dentist is giving you a routine infiltration injection and the area is abcessed, very often you will not get numb because local anesthesia doesn't work well in infected areas. That's the reason for the maxillary nerve block. This should only be done by Oral Surgeons, who use is frequently. Also the fact that you are pregnant is a consideration. Oral Surgeons have advanced training in medicine and many have both dental and medical degrees.
Find a good, compassionate Oral Surgeon and you won't have any problems and your extraction will be very easy and fast.
Also, the extraction by an Oral Surgeon will literally take only about 30 seconds after you are numb, not an hour and a half.

Been there done that.
Had a tooth that was abscessed, it would not take freezing.
8 needles and still would not go to sleep.
also the tooth had a crown.
the dentist pulled the crown off, broke the tooth in half.
Before this started, the dentist said it will take 20 min.
I was in the chair 4 hours.
the top of the tooth broke off, leaving 3 roots.
2 came out ok painless.
the abscessed root, would not come out, plus there was only half a root left. Almost pasted out in pain.
Being pregnant will make it problematic.
Good luck.
I feel for you.

If you can manufacture a reasonable excuse, and I think any one is reasonable, I would suggest you talk to them about putting you out all the way. That is the only sure fire way to get out of it.
I wonder how common this "bad experience" things is. I'm hearing more and more from people having bad experiences and I had a doozy myself.
Be careful and if you don't feel comfortable doing it immediately, depending on the risks inherent with leaving it in, seriously consider putting it off until you can have a consultation.
If you can't, make sure you do express your concerns to the dentist today and let them know about your fears.

If you don't like the dentist or are uncomfortable with him, don't go or have him refer you to an oral surgeon. Had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled and didn't feel a thing. They even had to break one of them in to six pieces to get it out. Had many friends go to dentists for extractions, and they all said they would never do it again. Anything aside from cleanings, fillings and other tooth repairs, an oral surgeon is the way to go (just my opinion).

not as bad as leaving it in. Make sure you have a post-partum exam since you have had trouble with your teeth before. Pregnancy is very hard on the choppers.
ofcourse the guillotine option wouldn't hurt as bad

It is going to hurt like H E L L they will not give you enough Novocain to dull the pain because you are pregnant and they will not risk damaging the child. they will not prescribe pain meds for the same reason on not wanting to harm the child. It looks like your going to be in for a fun time next time try taking better care of the teeth.

I think Dentists and gynecologists should hook up...that way when they say "open wide" we can just get the nasty business over with all at once.

IT SHOULD NOT HURT THAT BAD. I HAD ONE DONE NOT TO LONG AGO. IF YOU TOOTH IS INFECTED IT WILL HURT WHEN HE IS MESSING WITH IT ANY WAY. I HAD A ROOT CANAL AND IT WAS NOT TO BAD I WAS HAPPY JUST AS SOON AS HE STUCK THAT NEEDLE UP THERE AND RELIVED THE PRESSER
