The Inquisition back then was to combat the heresy of the Catheri and other arising cults that perverted the word of Christ. STarted in 1231 by Pope Gregory IX, torture wasn't approved until Pope Innocent IV in 1252. The Cathari tended to reject not only the outward symbols of the Christian church, such as the sacraments and the hierarchy, but also the basic relationship between God and humanity as taught by orthodox Christianity. The Cathari adhered to the dualist belief that the material world is evil and that humans must renounce the world to free their spirits, which are good and long for communion with God. Jesus was seen as an angel whose human suffering and death were an illusion, going against the teachings of the church where he was the son of God and died for our sins. Like most cults, they set themselves up in communities and sepperated their own followers in a caste system.

The movement ended in the 15th century.

The Inquisition was a court set up by the government of Spain and later France, to deal with the crime of heresy. Heresy was considered a threat to the unity and stability of the nation, which is why the goverment was involved.

The stated purpose was to root out heresy, but I believe the real purpose, as in all such measures throughout history, was to assert power through terror.
