Hello all - I have a 10 month old Jack Russell that sheds a HUGE amount of hair.
He is not a short haired or a long haired (hes in the middle). Its becoming really annoying cause there is hair all over the house and in the car.
Any suggestions...
I was told once to shave all his hair off??????

LONGJOHN - I am asking this question for serious answers, not for arrogant people that cant even answer a simple question without having a dig.
My dog sheds way more then most Jack Russells my family has had in the past. GROW UP and get some friends

Don't shave him. The would be very bad for the dog. Brush him daily when he's shedding like crazy. Talk to your vet to make sure nothing is wrong with him.
Can you call the breeder and ask if this is what to expect with a JR this age or this time of year?
If the pup is healthy and his coat is reacting to a change in seasons, it will stop. The best bet is to brush him with a brush made for his kind of coat and wait a couple of weeks.

From what everyone else has said, a shedding JRT is just a fact of life. Aside from the grooming and daily brushing, try switching to a better quaility food. That wont cease the shedding, but it should help considerably. Try an all stages formla instead of a puppy formula, like Canidae (available at PetCo) or Merrick (available at Pet Supplies Plus). Not only will it help with the shedding, but the dog will be all around more healthy. the coat will be shinier and the dog will be using more of the food and pooping less. And be cause the food is better and does not have useless fillers like Purina Iams/Eukanuba and Science Diet, the dog will actually eat less. Saving you money. Which is a good thing!

jack russells are NOT a non-shedding breed! All coat types shed! Smooth coats shed the most, dropping hair continuously year round. Rough coats maintain the guard and dead coat, requiring manual shedding a few times a year. The broken coat is an intermediary coat, between the two types. Do not shave it it is normal to do this Alot of brushing will help on this problem

Animals shed in the fall to replace their thin summer coat with thick winter fur. In the spring, they will shed to prepare for upcoming warmer days. Loss of hair is determined by your pet's exposure to light. Animals that are kept inside under artificial light shed more than they normally would.
Frequent brushing and combing between baths will help remove old hair and reduce shedding.

he may be losing his puppy fur. could be a vitamin deficiency. ask your vet. there are products out there at pet supply stores that minimize shedding. try brushing him everyday. we have a burnese mtn / lab mix that sheds year round. he's a very large dog and we almost fill a 13 gallon trash bag EVERY DAY. we've had Jake for about 7 yrs and have never found the bottom. he's just an outside dog. but after 2 years of being tied to a tree and beat with a stick before we got him, we can't tie him and he wanders if he hears kids playing. so he has to stay in unless we're outside and he just overheats.

Welcome to the joys of dog ownership.
J/R's shed. Not much you can do about it, and shaving him won't help. He'll still shed, just shorter stubby hair.
Pugs, which are very short haired, shed a profuse amount. You wonder how they manage to look like they still have hair.
My best advice, buy a good lint brush and vacuum lots.
For anyone else wanting a dog, but worried about shedding, poodles don't shed much. Toy or standards.

Go to the pet store and buy a dog brush, one with inch long or longer ,smooth tip metal bristles, where plenty of hair can collect between the bristles. If you brush him regularly with this brush, this will cut down on the amount of hair you find around the house.

The best thing you can do is bath him about once a week with shampoo designed to get rid of loose hair. And also brush him every day with a puppy brush and hand mitt. The dog will love it and you will have a hair free house. Well almost!!!!

If you feel your dog is shedding excessively, have him checked by your vet to make sure it's not health related. Otherwise, get out the vacuum and have fun with it the way I do (twice a day).
