In digital still cameras & camcorders it's given as 2X, 5X, 10x optical zoom.
Similarly, in Nokia camera phones they mention as 1.2 mega pixels 2 MP etc.
What's the difference between this two?
tell me clearly what's 1X zoom.
tnks in advance...!!

People don't use the term 1x zoom because (if you look at it from a maths point of view) that would mean that the lens can't zoom at all.
The 3x, 5x, 12x zoom gives you a rough idea of how big the zoom range is, but it doesn't specify where the zoom starts or stops. For that, you have to look at the zoom range as expressed in 'mm'.
Most digital cameras start at 28mm or 35mm. That's pretty decent for a wide angle shot.
If a camera has a 35-105mm lens, you can calculate the zoom range by dividing those two numbers: 105/35 = 3x zoom.
A 28-280mm lens has 280/28 = 10x zoom
A 35-280mm lens has only 280/35 = 8x zoom
You get the idea.
The smaller the first number is, the better it is for wide angle shots. The bigger the second number is, the more you can zoom in on small details. If the larger number is 200mm or more, you'd normally need a tripod or image stabilization - that's pretty powerful.
Then there's a distinction between optical and digital zoom. Optical zoom is achieved by the lens - this preserves image quality. Digital zoom on the other hand, is achieved by software, at the expense of image quality. When shopping and comparing cameras, it's best to ignore digital zoom. Digital zoom is just a gimmick.
Finally, you asked about MP (megapixels). The more megapixels a camera has, the more details it stores with each picture, and the larger you can print. A 3 MP camera is plenty for normal size prints and a 6 MP camera is good enough to make full-page prints.
But with Nokias and other phones, never mind the megapixel count. These cameras use lenses that are so tiny that you can't get a decent picture no matter how many megapixels the sensor has. If the lens is crap, megapixels don't matter. If you want to make decent prints, you'll need a dedicated camera.

Optical zoom is the ability of the camera to zoom in with the lens. Digital zoom is the ability of the camera to zoom in with it's computer chip. Optical zoom is far better than Digital zoom.
1X zoom means you can zoom the cameras lens 1 time. Anything multiplied by 1 equals the original number, so 1X means there isn't any zoom feature. What you see is what you get (it's a phone, so what do you expect).

Its just it zooms in the object one time closer than it really is. Thats a very low zoom. I wouldnt go less than a 4x zoom which is what I have and Im dissappointed. Next purchase would be atleast a 6x zoom. My camera also is a 6 mp . Which is great for what I need it for. Ps when looking for zooms, optical is lots better than digital zoom. Make sure the camera has optical, it can have optical and digital both and thats fine. But just not digital only.

most cameras support various zoom distances measured in mm of focal length.
example
15-30mm - wide angle no zoom
30-100mm - no zoom
100mm and above - telephoto zoom
usually cameras have a zoom range like 12mm-60mm
so the zoom is 60/12 = 5x
so a camera with a 5x zoom and 10mm starting focal length goes up to 10mm
so a 1x camera means no optical zoom...

Optical zoom is better than digital zoom. If the camera has optical zoom than the lens moves. If you see a film camera with a large zoom lens on it that is equivalent to about 3X optical zoom on a digital camera.

1x digital zoom is how much you can zoom in on the picture after you have taken it. mp i think is how blurry the image is. try looking up some cameras on bizrate.com and click on a camera you want and click on defintions and it should tell you there.

1x is like...... the multiple of ur object from infinity
lets say your object is....... 100 meter distance.. you are zooming to 1x means you are making it near 1 time...
you can assume it like 10 meter..
so you are not on 90 meter distance from your object
lets say your object is .. 1000 meter distace
you are making it near 6x six times.. lets assume 1x = 100 meter..
so you are now nearer to object 400 meter..
got my point..
it is the multiple division from infinity..
