In order for movies to "work" you have to buy into at least something that you are watching. Otherwise you won't lose yourself in the film. Fiction and the audience have an unspoken contract called "convention" that means the film will entertain you as long as you are willing to suspend disbelief.

As far as messages go, some filmmakers insist on sending a message to the masses (Think of Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Star Trek Next Generation). Other filmmakers rely on the human interest in the story and the spectacle/visual aspects of the film to entertain with no particular moral lesson involved.

Some people get annoyed when a movie "preaches" to them, even in indirect ways. Those people believe that messages should be confined to message sending services (like Western Union).

Ironically, no one can participate in ANY form of communication without being exposed to some kind of message. Even if the message is "messages don't belong in films"--that's the message!

"if you can't belive a little in what you see on the screen; it's not worth wating your time in cinema.'

i think this means that it's pointless to watch a movie if you don't believe at all in what you see

"Pictures are for entertainment, messages should be delivered by Western Union

this one means that movies are only for entertainment and you shouldn't have to look for meaning in them.

I think these two quotes are oppositing views

I think it means if you can't enjoy the little things in life, you will never truly enjoy the big things...too narrow minded
