You never said what part of Liverpool. The city centre or Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
From Liverpool City Centre the best bet would be to get a train to Manchester Airport. (I am not sure if this is direct or you may have to change once)
From John lennon Airport there is a new direct bus route to central manchester. From there you can get a train or bus from manchester city centre.
A taxi would cost a wedge of cash unless you where able to agree a reasonable fare before the journey.

Edit
You could try an airport transfer company if you have several people who need to go. That might work out cheap otherwise look to see if you can book a cheap room in a hotel close to manchester airport, they will usually do the transfer from the hotel to the airport for free.

Ring round some of the local firms for an idea of price and how much notice you would need to give them to book in advance.
