It is cold! It can be as cold as below freezing, 0 degree centigrade. You might see snow. This is one of the most beautiful time for Beijing, since it is a white world, so pure and clean in the air! You can check the weather from this link: http://www.jiasdreamtours.com/tt_climate.html

What kind of shopping do you want? If you just want to window shopping or get a feeling about shopping atmosphere in Beijing, then go to Wangfujing shopping street. It is more beautiful at night since it's all well lit up and it is a walking street.

For the bars, try the new ones in Houhai area, which is close to the old town of Beijing. Or maybe you can try a tea house: have a cup of tea while enjoying this ancient capital at leisure! While in Rome do as Romans do!

I don't thing it's a good idea to go to Beijing in January unless you have to. Cuz it's extremely WINDY and cold.

Actually the temperature is not very low, but the wind is way to strong. No one likes hanging out in Jan.

Expats have been hanging out in this area called "hou hai", where the "he hwa shi chang" (literally meaning Lotus Flower Market) is. There are a string of bars, restaurants all surrounding the lake.

Ya show fu zhuang shi chang

Best place for shopping, mainly clothes, shoes and bags.

Go to the top floor after your shopping and there you can have a foot massage, manicure, pedicure etc.
