I am female, 40ish, no longer smoke and have gotten pneumonia 7 now out of the last 10 years. I get it almost the same time each year. I do usually know when I have it from the same feeling in my chest and throat and cough I get. I have it now and also hate spending the $ on the Dr. and meds.

I am caucasian, but did find that fact about african americans and sickle cell interesting. I have a bad habit of just running outside, even in winter, not warmly dressed, like to get the mail, take out trash, etc. So that probably doesn't help.

Your immune system is not working well for you. Are you African-American? If you were, checked for sickle cell, commonly they get pneumonia.

You may consider getting pneumonia vaccine before the time. The other thing is do breathing exercises daily. Stay away from crowded rooms and rooms allowing smoking, and friends, enemies or families who have colds. Keep warm druing winter and avoid sudden changes in temperature on entering or leaving a room. Drink a lot of water.

I'd try taking a high potency multi - vitamin every day to build up the body's immunity and stay hydrated and maybe get some exercise to gain some strength.

Sounds like you need to get a flu vaccine every year.
