Orange is the best smell to use, cats wont go near it, however a 9 month old kitten will overcome the smell to get to a big sparkly tree with lots of stuff to play with.
The more you make a big deal of it the more it'll want to play mountaineer - thats cats for you!
Only thing you can do is get a smaller tree and place it higher up where your little fluffy ball of joy cant get at it - lol - you could hang it from the ceiling, a cat can perform miracles to get to something like a christmas tree!

You can try to citrus thing, also get a spray bottle, that seems to be the best way to stop cats from doing something you don't like. The other thing i would do would be to anchor the tree to the wall. Usually you can use a screw and fishing line (b/c you can't see the line for the most part). If you do this you at least won't come home to fond the whole thing laying in the floor with everything broken. She may grow out of it some by next year, my cat just likes to sleep under the tree and rub on the lower branches. Good Luck

The pet stores have a citrus spray. Keep it in a bottle and spray the cat whenever you seem him come close to the tree. A water bottle will work but not as effective as the citrus spray. I am having the same problem right now. Every morning, there are ornaments all over the floor. I can tell how high the kitten as climbed as there are bent branches about 3/4 the way up.
It is slowly working.

I had the same problem and I got some cat repellent. Spray the stuff on some tissue paper and place it under your tree stand cover. The cat will go for the tree, find out something is wrong and bolt in the other direction.
To further strength this you need to spray the cat with water every time they are near the tree. This will re-enforce to the cat that the tree is not a fun place to be.

Alas, trying to keep a cat out of a Christmas tree is like putting a Playboy in your teenage boy's bedroom and telling him not to look. It ain't gonna happen.
Try getting a citrus spray from the pet store. Cats definitely do not like the smell of any citrus fruit. Spray it on the tree and underneath it.
Other than that, you might want to just accept that you will have a few broken bulbs and let the cat enjoy Christmas too.
One word of caution - icicle tinsel is EXTREMELY dangerous for cats. When they eat it the acids in their stomach cause the edges of the tinsel to become like razor blades inside them. It can also entwine around their gut causing gangrene and a very painful death. Please forego the tinsel if you have a cat.

Spray the tree with some citrus juice like lemon or lime. The cat won't go near it again.

Get rid of the Christmas tree :-) Or the kitten! Serious, I used a water gun ( or plant sprayer) to train my cat and now she is the sweetest purring ball of fur. Everytime you cat does something wrong, for instance exploring your christmas tree, spray her INSTANTLY. She will not like it, and after not too long she will realise that tree means water.
Good luck!

I have bought a product called Grannicks Bitter Apple which was recommended to me, but I havnt tried it myself yet. Also, apparently if you stand the tree on silver foil this also works, as they dont like the feel of it.
Hopefully this will also work with my kitten who is a total maniac!

O they love 'em don't they?
the citrus suggestions you have here are very good.
I have a water spray (for house plants) when Sybil (my naughty cat) does things like this, I discourage her with a squirt from this. It doesnt hurt but she doesnt like it and so stops without too much fuss. Also she doesnt associate it with me as I am not shouting at her or anything.
