Simple: imagine a world where only a country like Iran has a nuclear weapon - would you want to live in such a world? I hate war, and the prospect of a nuclear war is terrifying, but there are some things we cannot avoid, no matter how evil they are. From the moment the atom bomb was detonated over Hiroshima, the world changed. Personally, I wish that the atom bomb had never been invented, but it has and we cannot change that. We can at least be thankful that the leaders of the world have made nuclear weapons a deterrent, rather than a regularly used tool in modern warfare.

Tony Blair wants to keep Britain's nuclear arsenal because scrapping it would forfeit our biggest deterrent. No leader, no matter what he or she believes, could possibly want to make their country more vulnerable and open to attack. We can't rely on alliances as they can crumble when taxed, and nor can we predict with certainty what the future world will be like.

Like most things in life, there is no easy solution to this problem. We just need to live with it until a better solution can be found.

It is in Britians self interest to have the weapons to defend itself. If you look at the news Red China continues to expand and modernize its military forces and trying to find new bases in the Pacific for its Navy. Russian appears to have developed nostalgia for Stalinism. So the best deterent is a strong defense. Unfortunately, it includes modernizing nuclear weapons.

Reading these answers I only wonder one thing, how long does England have left, along with the rest of Europe and the US for that matter, because most people obviously just don't get what we're really up against, or they're to PC to allow themselves to take action. All I can hope is that they wake up before it's to late.

The only reason I can think of is that his relatives have shares in the arms trade or some component that is needed in the manufacturing of nuclear weapons, you must admit the Blairs and their cohorts are all very dodgy.

I've tried to think of a reason why Blair would want these. the only reasons i could think of were, a perverted sense of nationalism or he's been bought and paid for by the companies that will profit from them. i am erring on the side of bought and paid for. the same company names keep coming up for govt. contracts and after a statement he made on GM, that the companies had 'done all the science', they hadn't, still haven't and won't. at that time i thought either he is ignorant or in their pockets.

i ought to ask Bush to post to a psychological exam and that i ought to tell Tony he replaced into more advantageous in his element even as he replaced right into a rock movie star--and with techniques from the way, you want to strengthen a backbone and stop doing what ol' George tells you to do, Tony--you should by no skill pay interest to a psychological affected human being.

we need them for our protection, in an ideal world there would be no nuclear weapons and no war, but as we all know we do not live in an ideal world
