About 1/2 cup of madeira goes into the entree. I guess it's still illegal...

I wouldn't worry about it. The alcohol does cook out, and there isn't enough residual to do anything significant.

Specially if they are your kids or the kids parents are also present.

If giving any alcohol to a minor would be illegal, essentially, all fruits, leavened breads, etc. would also be illegal, as they all have trace amounts of alcohol from the wild/cultured yeast. :-D

FWIW, here is an interesting link that talks about the law; I can't say that it's correct, as I'm not a lawyer.

It's not illegal! The alcohol cooks out and leaves the flavor behind. That's not the same as giving your kids a glass of wine. My grandfather never tasted or consumed any booze ... alcohol never passed his 94 year old lips! Traditionally, Thanksgiving dinner was at his house. My wife was always responsible for bringing the pumpkin pies. A few years back, she found a recipe that called for a shot of whiskey to be added to the pie mix, which also cooked out, leaving the flavor behind. Once 'ol granddad (no pun intended) tasted those pies, he wouldn't have any others! He wasn't drunk ... just happy with the flavor!

P.S.: While it is illegal for minors to consume alcohol in public, it is legal to be served at home, if parents choose to do so ... taking into consideration the age of the minor child.

The alcohol will cook out. Chef in restuarants cook with various wines all the time. It shouldn't be a problem. Afterall, it's half-cup of wine in an entire dish. Then you're gonna heat it. Then divide it up among a number of people. You're fine. When cooking with wine, it's the flavor of the wine not the alcohol you are adding.

It is not illegal to serve entrees that use alcohol in the recipe as long as it is cooked and the alcohol is burned out. We make a pheasant dish all the time that calls for E&J Brandy, it is delicious and my 7 year old eats it. we also make beer battered onion rings, she eats those too. She don't get drunk or anything, as long as it is cooked it is fine. People use wines and other liquors in their dishes to bring out certain flavors not for the alcohol content.

I don't think its illegal. I would make the dish with the wine. Madeira wine is awesome to cook with and has wonderful flavor.

Yes the alcohol cooks out but gives a good flavor to the dish.

O sure, I it's okay. Depends on the food though. Red wine is also healthy--it's good for the heart, so I guess it's okay for the person under 21 to eat foods with red wine. 1/2 is just a very small quantity... seems like to just add taste... Don't worry a thing.

When cooking the alcohol cooks out as the evaporation temperature for alcohol is very low. However, the reason for using alcohol in most cooking is to get the flavor that the alcohol imparts and not for the alcohol itself.

Sure it is. I used to make Coq au vin (chicken in wine) and serve it to kids all the time. The alcohol burns off leaving the rich red wine flavour in your dish. No worries.

It's not illegal, it's perfectly fine. My kids eat penne a la vodka at least twice a week and we haven't gotten arrested yet.
