if you ask a guy in a flirty way to ask you out on a date, and he says he thinks is out on saturday, (meaning,hes out in town with his friends if i want to meet him out for a drink when im out with my friends), and to let hm know when im out, is that really a date?

errrr. no it aint a date. he is just keeping his options open in case he cant pull anyone else.

No, thats not a date. Thats a 'meet while in a social setting to see what you're like while socialising and see what his friends think of you'.
A date is the two of you alone.
Though after a few drinks he may be more inclined to ask you out on a one-to-one date if he's shy

No, that's a preliminary, to see if you like each other in a social context. A date should start and end with the two of you (or a silent chaperone / double date if you prefer).
He may be shy, or he may be unsure about you or dating - not enough info there to tell.

Sounds to me as if he'd like to have a drink with you but isn't comfy with one on one yet. It's a nice way for you to socialise without too much pressure.
Plus you get to meet his friends which will tell you more about him.
Of course it might also be down to the fact that he didn't want to be told to ask you out :-)

Well a date is usually one on one but if hes with his friends and if your with your friends its more of a social outing rather than a date.

You could meet up with him on Saturday when you're both with your friends, but that's not really a date! But once you did, you could just ask him straight out 'so, when's me and you out then?'

It is not your technical "date" but I don't see why you could not count it as a date. Yes he maybe a little shy that would be why he wanted to group date.

Not really a date, but you could think of it as a pre-date! Go for it and have fun. I don't necessarily think he is shy, just cautious.
