I have noticed he's been drinking lots of water. He hasn't lost his appetite and still is quite happy. Can anyone suggest some ways to help him gain weight as he's starting to look awful.

I would still take him to the vets because any dramatic weight loss combined with greater thirst should be checked. There are many medical conditions that this could be a symptom of and will need medication. If your vet cant find any thing try a product avail from chemist called Incremin. Its an appetite stimulant for fussy eater kids. Its safe for your dog and is a basic multivit.

Have you wormed the dog lately???? I would get the dog wormed and worms will cause them to drink lots of water and loose weight.
Drinking an excessive amount of water can be a kidney problem also, and the weight loss can be differant factors. Take the dog to the vet and they will be able to diagnose what really is going on with your dog.

Please take him to the vet. There are a couple of problems which can cause this and can be treated.

The vet can not only weigh him and treat him, you can also go in periodically and check his weight on their scale.

Don't wait. If this is something to do with his kidneys it is better to treat it sooner before the kidneys suffer permanent damage.

Neutered dogs are actually supposed to get bigger, so that is weird. Try some better quality food. I switched my dogs from Purina One to Eukanuba and noticed a change in their muscle tone and coat sheen. He may also have worms. Check his stool, (gross), but glance at it for worms or check if he rubs his butt on the grass (sign of anal irritation). You should take him to the vet for a dewormer or order one from http://www.1800petmeds.com/ (it is cheaper).
