As the speed limit on most roads is maximum 100 km/h, why do the automakers give the ability to go faster than that?

Why doesn't the gov't step in and put some sanctions in place, encouraging the auto dindustry to comply with local authorities to assist in the promotion of road safety?

Because not all countries speed limits are the same, it would cost manufacturers too much money to place different limiters on cars going to different countries.
Sometimes it's actually safer to accelerate away or around an accident than to brake, so if you were travelling at 100km/h and an accident ocurred that it would be safer to accelerate away from, if the car was limited to 100km/h you would be put in danger.
Plus you can take the cars to a race track and drive the speeds they are created to do perfectly legally.

There are roads where there aren't any speed limits ... Germany's Autobahn, for example. There are also countries where there aren't any speed limits in rural areas. You also need the ability to accelerate, no matter what speed you are driving, for defensive maneuvering and passing. If you found yourself in a situation where you may be involved in an accident without the ability to accelerate and move out of harm's way, you'd be screwed. Better to have the additional power, when you want or need it, than to not have it at all!

- Track days
- Different countries have different speed limits - over here it's 70mph on dual carrigeways and motorways, over in Germany it's unlimited on some roads.
- If the car was geared to go flat out all the time it would wear out the engine very quickly.
- It's not like everyone always sticks to the speed limit.

If they were made all the same then wouldn't that be kinda boring if not Communistic? What I think is ironic is that in Europe they have the Autoban where in alot of places you can drive almost as fast as you want. But Europe has fewer traffic accidents than the United States were we have speed limits everywhere.

It's a macho thing- who would buy sports car if they couldn't accelerate to high speeds quickly? For the THRILL- and besides, they can always ship their car over to Germany and race on the Audobon - no speed limit there.

If cars were designed to only go 70 kmh they would be running flat out all the time. That would cause tremendous wear and tear on the car and wear it out much faster. You would also have to tune it and replace lubricants much more often.

Autos need extra power to climb steep hills, pull trailers, and things of that nature.....
It's up to YOU to use that power wisely.
Alcohol can kill you if you don't use it wisely also, right?
P.S. The first answer is not stupid. It is correct, but not the ONLY correct one.

Accept responsibility for your own actions. Driving drunk is illegal too, but you don't expect the liquor company to make drunk-proof booze, do you?
