Also, what about the hidden environmental costs of junk mail and leaflets which people tend to put straight into the bin? Has anyone come across any research on this topic?

In relation to junk mail, a programme on the BBC reported an average house hold receives over 300 leaflets a year of junk mail.

If a leaflet weighs an average 5g, this would mean that each house receives around 1.5kg of junk mail. If you times this by the number of houses, you will find the figure is astronomical.

The hidden cost are that the forests are diminishing and wildlife.

I would imagine that IT is phenomenal, and while it might be very difficult to significantly reduce the junk mail, however nice that would be, it would be a great help for our environment, if we would just start using hemp to make paper, instead of cutting down trees. Hemp is cheaper, makes better paper, and is more renewable. However, the large paper industry, doesn't want us to do this, because they are only concerned about money.
