Gosh you've had so many answers!
In the UK, if you are aged between 18 and 65 we calculate fluid requirements based on weight. If you are not in a hot climate, sweating or exercising lots then it's around 35mls of water for every kg of body weight. For example a 60kg female would need 35 x 60 = 2100mls (2.1L) of fluid per day.
We do get fluid from the foods that we eat and from the breakdown of carbohydrate too. So this figure is a good place to start. The best indicator of not drinking enough is you are thirsty!
Hope this helps.

In my humble opinion, I think the 7-8 glasses of water a day is ideal. I decided to lose weight but don't like diets & fads so I simply took smaller portions (got to make some small sacrifice) and drank 7 - 8 glasses of water a day. Result? a few things. I lost 3 stone in 2 months. The additional water when in your blood stream (water being H20) gave me so much more energy I fely great! I can't recommend it enough! 2 litres per day is recommended, they're now saying not to get too hung up on drinking 2 litres of just water though because things like tea/coffee potatoes and fruit also have a lot of water in them which counts towards it xx

6-8 glasses of water a day is sufficient. If you are active, or exercising you may want to increase this. If you drink alcohol or caffeine you need more water as both can cause dehydration (in excess) Rule of thumb for this is every decaffeinated drink or alcoholic drink you must get 2 cups of water.

6 - 8 glasses of water per day but it depends on what activities are you doing throughout the day. If you do strenous activities you definitely need more. Also, it depends on the type of climate you are into. Is it hot? Is it cold? that will affect your need for fluids in a day.

a simple question with no easy answers. Studies have produced varying recommendations over the years, but in truth, your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are and where you live.
Though no single formula fits everyone, knowing more about your body's need for fluids will help you estimate how much water to drink each day.

You might find it interesting that there isn't a single scientific study to support the often stated 8 8-oz glasses per day.
