Where are you from, and do you know what ketchup is? Apparently every language in the world has the word in their dictionary, except Icelandic.

I'm from Iceland. I know what ketchup is, we just call it tómatsósa in my native language. We're more into making Icelandic words for things rather than taking foreign words into our language. I doubt we're the only country in the world that doesn't use the word ketchup though.

Ketchup in icelandic is tómatsósa, direct translation is tomato-sauce. When something new is invented, icelanders always have to make specific icelandic word for it. Like computer which is in many languages computer or a similar word, is tölva in icelandic.

This is because Iceland has their own, unchanged language. Icelandic has not had any new words added to it for quite a long time; unlike English, which gets a new word like Bling everyday.

Iceland tries to preserve it's cultural language by not adding any words to it that haven't already been in place for hundereds of years. Ketchup may be too new of a word for them to add and understand.
