If a person is going to serve God full time, then he/she cannot have the distractions of a partner. Partners demand sex. Sex outside of marriage is fornication. A man or woman cannot divide their time between God and family matters. To serve God the flesh must be brought under control. A person is ruled either by the flesh or the Spirit.

Well it's obviously an unnatural act isn't it? The whole concept of celibacy is contrary to the very instincts of the human being,or any being for that matter. The only drive which is stronger than the sex drive is the drive for basic survival, food water etc. For a human to even make it all the way through puberty celibate is in many cases a difficult act,and not entirely natural in itself. To push celibacy beyond that is simply insane. I personally believe that the forced celibacy of the Catholic Church is in fact to blame for many of the sex scandals, these are men who have sex drives just like any other man,and the number of men who can push that aside based on faith is a very small percentage of what the church needs to fill the priesthood. And many studies of human sexuality have shown that the libido can take some pretty dark turns already, throw in the denial of it like they do and it's really no surprise that they have the problems they do. Then they try to pretend that this is some new problem, however if one goes back far enough they find many examples that it's a problem with a long history. There have been stories and accusations involving priests and other clergy for a very long time, every so often it becomes a big deal, they say they will do something about it then nothing is done, like the nothing they're basically doing now. They talk a good game but it's all apparently talk, except paying off the victims to make it go away. And in my humble opinion all of it can be laid at the feet of this idea of chastity,an idea that is simply unrealistic for a lifetime.

Mandatory celibacy is definately unscriptural, because it's not the person making the decision, it's a doctrine that's forced onto them. Paul prophesied at 1 Timothy 4:3 that, in the "latter times," people would be forbidden to marry because of teachings of those who've departed from the true faith. (It should be noted that Scripture tells us we've been in the "latter times" since Jesus' death). These are Scriptural truths of which the Catholic Church, which forces celibacy on its priests and nuns, should take note.
Paul also wrote at 1 Cor. 7:5 that married couples shouldn't deprive their spouses of sex unless BOTH consented to it. So again, Scripture reiterates that celibacy must be completely voluntary.
On the other hand, Jesus and Paul both taught that voluntary celibacy brings a person closer to God (Matthew 19:12, 1 Cor. 7:25-40). This is because an unmarried person can devote his or her life to God and doesn't have to worry about pleasing a spouse (1 Cor. 7:34). Anyone who cannot remain celibate because they "burn with passion," should marry in order to remove the possiblity they will commit fornication (1 Cor. 7:8-9).
I hope this helps. Peace.

My personal belief is that it is not natural. God did not give us sexual urges just to suppress them for a lifetime as Catholic priests and nuns and such are required to do. Men's sexual urges tend to be stronger than women's (generally speaking of course.) This is why there are so many priests who have had to take a vow of celibacy are now being outed as molesters. It is not natural!!!

I'm sure I can't help you much on your research but here is how I feel about it. There was a time in the past due to the inability to prevent pregnancy and disease I could see the necessity for abstinence. I suppose that is what you refer to. In today's world we still have the deadly disease HIV and AIDS still with the proper care and today's prevention methods there is no reason using the proper caution that a person shouldn't enjoy their sexual activity fully. xxx

If you want serious answer, you might want to pose a serious question/topic. Pray-tell what will your punishment be for violating 'mandatory celibacy'? Let me guess a wearing a big red 'A' on your clothes perhaps.

Celibacy is for priesthood only. But it's so hard for them to control themselves because they're just human. Very few can manage to keep this vow of celibacy.

I've read the bible several times. I haven't read anywhere in the bible that demands a person be celibate. The Apostle Paul said if you can't contain, it's better to marry than to burn.

are you writing a paper on people's views on celibacy? Or are you writing a paper on Celibacy as practiced in different faiths and want us to do your work for you?
Peace and Blessings,

If one is studying for the priesthood, they make that choice. Once the decision is made, it should be mandatory.
In the secular world, it should be totally one's choice. Not everyone can remain celibate due to human nature.
