If she's totally stumped, a practical (though un-romantic) gift would be a gift certificate from his favourite gadget store, like Apple or Fry's.
And no man has ever said no to an iPod...but that'll be a big hole in the pocket for a student.
A cute gift idea could be for her to buy a blank T-shirt, then put her own design on it. She could use fabric paint to draw a cool design on it, or come up with her own design and find an art store that will print it for her.
