Respect his feelings about being in a relationship. Let him know you'll be there for him as a friend.

You should tell him how you feel say you don't want too loose him yet don't want to push him into a relationship. If you really like this guy then you need to know where you stand with each other. It may not be the best idea to go straight into a relationship yet as a long one has just finished and he will need time to get over that. go out with each other and just have fun and take things from there.

Good Luck and i hope things work out for you.

You were wise to make your stand and tell him how you feel and what you will and won't do. Pulling away was a smart move, he knows you're not going to let anyone use you or walk all over you and put turmoil in your life. Leave it alone, you said what you had to say and what he does about it is entirely up to him.

Try your best to forget about him, please don't text him, wait and see if he texts you. At least he has been honest with you and told you he doesn't want a relationship with you - well not of the sort you would like anyway. Try to move on and enjoy life, there are plenty of nice guys to fall in love with out there. Best wishes.

you're on the right track about giving him his own space, just let him know that all though you like him and would love to be with him, you'll just be there for him first and foremost as a friend, trust me, i said the same thing to my ex before we dated and me and the guy where together for a long while. just be his friend fist and if wants to get with you, he'll get with you when he's ready, don't rush him into anything, i know it may feel like agony waiting around for him, but if he's the right guy for you, it'll happen when it's ready to happen.

i think for the momment just leave him alone, he made it clear that he don't want a relationship, it is so obvious so what are you still expecting for. at least give him some time before he really wants to start a new relationship, and if he thinks you are the right one for him he'll call you.
