Yes, they can.
Enlistments can be extended depending on the situation. Also, sometimes the brances implement stop loss. That means that, at time, some career fields will hold people in because they need them. So, even if their time is up they cannot leave. AND if it is his first term of enlistment they can keep him in under reserve. You sign up for 4 yrs. active duty and actually another 4 yrs. as reserve. That means if his 4 yrs. is up they can keep him another 4 as reserve...if they need him.
Why haven't you heard from him? Doesn't he call you anyway?

im currently in iraq. i has signed up for six years. anyhow it doesnt matter what branch you choose or if you choose four or six year enlistments. when you sign the contract, you are signing it for 8 years. im not bullshiting you. this is how it works. your either sign for 4 or 6, but if something goes down, like world war 3 and they need more people and you have served 6 and have been out for 1 year, you still owe one more to make 8. anyhow its odd though about your question. he's probably trying to state a message or perhaps and wanted an extension.

If there is a declared state of war, the U.S. government can keep you in indefinitely. Volunteering for military service has some weird quirks, like being forced to serve beyond your term of enlistment, especially if they need you, and right now with the situation in the world being what it its, the US needs its personnel in the military.
