THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF SCOPES USED FOR DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS
FOR INSTANCE, A LONG RANGE TARGET SCOPE OF 24-36 POWER WOULD NOT DO ON A DEER HUNTING RIFLE.
I DO NOT KNOW WHAT USE YOU HAVE IN MIND, THEREFORE I HAVE TO BE PRETTY GENERAL.
THERE ARE MANY GOOD SCOPES FOR $5OO DEPENDING ON YOUR NEEDS.
I SHOOT ALOT OF HIGH POWER (300 MAG AND 7 MAG FOR INSTANCE) I CHOSE THE LLEUPOLD DUE TO THE LONGER EYE RELIEF WHICH KEEPS ME FROM WACKING MY FACE OR SHOOTING GLASSES FROM RECOIL.
I AM HAPPY WITH THE RESOLUTION ALSO.
MUCH RESEARCH NEEDS TO GO INTO THWE SCOPE YOU WANT. TYPE OF GUN, CALIBER, TYPE OF HUNTING OR TARGET, SHOOTING DISTANCES, LIGHT FACTOR WHEN YOU SHOOT.
DO YOU WANT A VARIABLE POWER OR FIXED. DOU YOU NEED ADJUSTABLE FRONT OPTICS FOR PARALAX ADJUSTMENT.
HOW ABOUT A SUN SHADE OR MIRAGE SHIELD FOR LONG LONG RANGES WITH A HOT BARREL ?
CONSIDER TALKING TO A KNOWLEGEABLE SHOOTING PRO RATHER THAN A GUY ON COMMISSION AT A GUN SHOP OR RETAILER.
HAPPY SHOOTING
P.S. TRY CONSUMER REPORTS, TOO

You should be able to land a very decent scope (didn't say what magnification/size/type) for that price. The few I consider the best are Leupold, Zeiss, Kahles, and Swarovski. You will not be disappointed with a Leupold....I have three. Not knowing what your target is though, makes this a crapshoot.

Great people and great prices.

For 500 dollars you could get a high end Leupold (probably with money left over) or checkout a Zeiss(500 dollars would get you on the low-mid range).I'd go with Leupold,as the Zeiss are just too expensive for me personally.

What are you doing with the scope?Target shooting?Long range hunting?Short range hunting? The price is also dependent on the magnification as well.

I would most certienly get a luepold or swarowski. I have used several types of luepold on everything from rifles to muzzleloadersto shotguns and have never had a single problem with them. They also pick up light in those final minutes of hunting hours so you can be to sure to get a good luck at what your shooting.

I'm not sure what model your looking for, but I found a Leupold scope for different prices depending on the specs.

Here is a link for one that is $179.99:

Here is a link for one that is $329.99:

It really comes down to what type you want.

I hope this helps.
