It really depends on what kind of parrot you are talking about. People don't realize "parrot" is just an artificial category that includes a lot of different birds. This includes budgies (parakeets), conures, cockatiels, quakers, linnies, cockatoo's, macaws, amazons, greys, etc...etc...
So the life span of a parrot will really depend on what kind of parrot you are talking about. They can range from about 10-15 years for a budgie to 80+ years for a macaw.

I breed several species of parrots so I can let you know the average lifespan of the species that I am most familiar with...
African Greys can live 40-50 (or more!)years in captivity. Most amazons have similar lifespans.
Some of the large macaws and cockatoos can live 80 years or more.
These are very general estimates which depend on a lot of factors, the most important of which is the care that a parrot is given by it's owners (diet, clean living facilities, proper medical attention when needed, etc).
In the wild, parrots lives tend to be quite a bit shorter than their captive counterparts. This is due mainly to predation, food shortages, loss of habitat and other environmental issues.

legend doesn't always mean "legend " yellow crested white cockatoos can live till at least 100 (certainly outlive you and i )
most other large parrots are in the same bracket .
but like everything , it all comes down to the birds' environment . i have a cockatial who is 17 yrs and showing no signs of leaving us yet , oh! sure getting a bit tired , but nought else .

Some live more then 50 yrs. So it's best to get one when you're young or make arrangements for someone to take after your death (if you're older). They really get attached to you.
