how do i look after my dogs wound?

my dog has a wound on the back of his ear which i think is a bite from my other dog but she keeps licking the wound and reopening it what can i do should i bring him to the vet

If you don't have access to a pet store or vet. You can fold up newspaper to the width of your dogs nece from back of head to the shoulder and wrap it around the neck and secure it with duct tape. just make sure that the dog can reach to eat and drink. and that the collar is not too tight. Usually a dog cannot reach it's own ear. If it is the other dog that is licking it you can put a gauze patch on it and tape it to the ear to keep the other dog from licking it. you will need to change the bandage and keep an eye out for infection. if the wound starts to ooze or swell or get really red, you need to get some antibiotics. You can use amoxacillin on your pet but you should check with your vet for the proper dosage. also clean the wound with a betadine solution prior to wrapping it. If the ear is still being licked you can put tree tea oil on it or spray it with bug spray. My vet does this for incisions to keep the dogs from pulling/licking the stiches.

well my dog had a really big wound on her paw which was caused by a dangerous disease called erlychia which is a parasite from ticks and fleas.

anyway, what really helped her wound heal fast was an herbal remedy which you get by boiling GUAVA leaves in water. Let the water cool down, and keep it in fridge. And 3 times a day just dab the wound area withe the liquid.

If you dont have a guava tree, then i suppose use an antibacterial ointment. Like Fuciding Leo, or something like that.

My dog also used a plastic cone for about 2 weeks, but they hate it.

The wound will most likely not heal if the dog keeps on licking it so you might really have to use that cone.

The dog needs a vet. A bite wound can easily get infected.

If you have the money take it to the vet. If not a big gash, wash with antiseptic wash, put neosporin ointment on it, wrap with gauze, and put a cone collar on the dog to prevent it from licking the wound. Clean daily.

any major pet store will/should have a collar that looks like a cone. Which stops them from doing naughty like licking open wounds, pulling at stitches etc.. You mine have to take it off so he can eat but then put it right back on. should run you about 10 bucks

In my opinion you dont have to take it to the vet if you Clean and Dress the wound carefully. It will heal quickly,unless it is exreamly serious then yes take it to the vet.
There are times when its really not necessary to take your dog to the vet when you can look after her just aswell.
Otherwise they will charge you £80 for barely nothing.

Not nesseraly, use lightly salted water or an antiseptic powder to dry out the wound, you can also bandage it to stop your pooch from licking or chewing at the wound

A bite is a big risk for infection, so he may need anti-biotics. It's a puncture, and can develop an abcess. It being the ear, and if it pierced it, that may not be a worry.
