Sadly, the only safe thing for stairs when there are kids in the house is carpet - anything else makes them an accident waiting to happen. Why not get a cheap, pattered carpet that can be replaced when you are either fed up with it or it has too many kids stains from drinks etc on it.

RIP the carpet up first, then you can 1. see what has been used to build the stair Natural might be good.2. Wood, Paint! 3. See clearer what could go with the walls with out interference of the carpet. Only if your sure you want to change.

In my house there is a stair runner which is lovely - showing the rich wood underneath at each side and held on with claw clips.. it looks lovely! I would recommend a muted wall colour - I have a creamy colour which was painted only a year ago - and thanks to my kids (4/6) it now needs repainting over lots of yucky little hand prints!

first thing, if u put dark colors in your stairs is going to call the attention in your one year old, and u dont want that, try to use soft colors like light blue or green NOT PALE.. when you have kids is important for them to be safe first, how the walls look.
if u decideto go with colors like red purple or green make sure u always use safety opions for kisds.

i,d get the wear out of the carpet first, your kids will be a bit older then.theres a laminate system for stiars really finishes them off.but polished and not safe for kids to run up and down.
