To save the planet, we need to reduce, reuse and recycle. In addition, there's always conservation, stewardship and sustainable development. The later three would be more of a government/big organisation thing but you could always still practice the three Rs. (reduce, reuse and recycle)
Incidentally, I found a pretty good website showing the things that we can do. Here it is: http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/8319/savethearth.html
In my opinion, firstly, we need to research more about the harm that we are dealing to our planet. If we do not know how we are harming our planet, then how do we save it? Technological advances may cause harm to our planet but it can also help save it.
Secondly, I think everyone should play a part. As an individual, save energy whenever you can, and try not to waste things. (The planet would surely appreciate it if she could!) You could also join several organisations to help out with saving the planet/ promoting the importance of saving the planet. As a parent, teach your children about saving the planet; not wasting food/energy etc. As a company, aim to reduce wastage of resources and overtaxing the planet. In addition, make sure that your company causes as little pollution as possible (i.e. install certain things that would minimise pollution) As a nation, work together to do all of the above, but on a higher level. And in the end, let nations work together to save the planet. (i.e. Get all the countries in the world to contribute to saving the planet, e.g. by signing the Kyoto Protocol etc.)

The single most useful thing to do would be for everyone to be open and honest in the scientific debate and look for both pros AND cons.
Far too many people are selling their ideas without proper research or back up.
Bio fuel production is raising food prices, causing increased afforestation and increased use of fertilisers and poison sprays.
CFCs were banned but their replacements were not monitored so the replacement gas is many times more polluting!
People stick to one idea such as global warming when the causes are various and much better understood as climate change. The same amount of rain is falling just in a different place. Whilst the ice melts in one area it grows thicker in others and other oceans are growing colder.
The poles have flipped 170 times in the Earths history. The magnetic pole is moving 14 kilometres a year, The South Atlantic Anomaly is increasingly and causing magnetic flux to flow into instead of out of the area. Earths magnetic field has reduced by 10%. All signs that another flip is coming and it is about 200,000 years overdue!
There are so many things that are causing change on the planet and some are actually caused by man doing what we think is doing good for the planet.
So what is needed is that open and honest though, open debate, good scientific research and above all else proper scientific testing of the theories.

Humans can have a better standard of living by doing the following:
1) Reduce the human population
2) Use alternative energy sources and eliminate fossil fuels
3) Ban warfare from planet Earth
4) Eliminate Urban Sprawl
5) Preserve open spaces and create animal habitats
6) Enact tough environmental standards to protect all species of animals
7) Create a new religion that puts humans into proper perspective: We are mammals and, therefore, animals, not the design of some made-up supernatural Deity.

Destroy Technology, destroy construction, destroy the human race...only then will the planet have time to heal and be truly saved. We are destined to destroy it if we keep going the way we are now.
