There's that old saw, "experience is the best teacher". Brainstorming is great. But realizing an idea sometimes might be made easier if you've had some experience on which to build.
So it doesn't have to be either/or. Leonardo Da Vinci studied birds to design his flying machine which wasn't realized until hundreds of years later.
