Generally speaking, its at Company level. Once they are a Company Commander (CO), they may go out on missions, but its the Platoon Leaders (PL) that are leading their men on the mission itself. The PL's will call up to the CO to report and he will give out guidence and direction, but it is still the PL that will be "up front" with the soldiers.

It depends on the officer, but I would say that in modern warfare it ends definitively at the Division level. In the brigade I am serving with the Brigade Commander is still out in the battlespace a great deal.

participation is not always determined by rank. ideally, an officer is supposed to lead by example, but in practice things are different. generally speaking, officers, esp. staff or flag grade are considered to be an asset worthy of protecting. some enlisted men fall under the "technical neccisity: umbrella. for example, during the first Gulf War, there was only one intelligence analyst embarked onboard the C3I platform assigned so control the 9th Amphibious Readiness Group. There was no one else in the ARG that was capable of replacing him should he fall into harm's way. Although an unwritten policy that would never be openly condoned, it logically follows that the analyst's life would be more valuable, since he would be much more difficult to replace than an undesignated striker.
