Actually, I have just started a Sock Ministry at my church. We are getting donations (from church members). We take a new pair of socks, put in a gift card for a fast food restaurant, a toothbrush and toothpaste and a piece of candy. We also put in a card with the church's phone number if they have access to a phone or can come by.
This doesn't sound like much, but we do not have a large (or very rich) church. It is cold where we live and a nice, dry, warm pair of socks is a good gift. Almost half of our homeless are people with children, not substance abusers.
I also handed out a fact - sheet on homelessness, asking church members to ask their elected officials what they are doing to help the homeless. I also asked them to patronize the businessess in town who are working to provide affordable housing.
If everyone did a little bit of something, we could all help the homeless.

It takes a certain level of discernment to help the homeless. I would most likely help the homeless if 1.) I was sure they were homeless and 2.) with a group of some sort. When it comes to approaching strangers (of any sort), there's a personal security issue to be aware of. No way do I swear at them.

Contrary to popular belief, not all homeless people are homeless because of drugs.
A lot of people are living paycheck to paycheck, which means all those people are just a few months away to being homeless themselves. Think about it for a minute.
Anyhow, I do help when I can. I generally try to keep some fast food gift cards in the car with me, that way they can get a warm meal. Rarely do I offer cash.
I also donate money to causes locally that help.

I donate clothes to homeless shelters. I almost never give beggars money on the street, because I suspect most of them would spend it on booze or drugs and I prefer spending my money on something better than sponsoring somebody's substance abuse. I don't swear at them though. Depending on their behavior I greet them politely or ignore them.

Help them when I can, I pray first and ask God what they need, money, food, prayer.... sometimes I just pray silently for them, or cry out for them. Sometimes I give them my food or buy them food or give them some money. Sometimes they just want to talk. I let God lead me. It works better that way as He already knows them and knows their needs. We must have compassion, on drugs or not it is still a bondage they are in and we can't judge what brought them to that place, we can thank God that we are not there and not be so high in are thinking that we are beyond that. Until you experience some of the torment and heartache mixed with different personality types and temperaments and reactions you can see that it is complex and not for us to judge but to give as we feel led to do.

I volunteer from time to time at a food bank. I donate to charitable organizations. I do not usually give money to panhandlers. I don't want the money used for drugs.

Most people are homeless because they do drugs and spend all their money on drugs and don't have jobs..I usually just ignore them..I kinda get angry at them but I pity them at the same time.
