We have yet to find a 'traditional' Chinese place we like in Austin. Several are okay, but in the end, PF Chang's is as good or better than most.

However, for Asian fusion, we like Mama Fu's up by Lakeline (north on 183 to where the highway ends, in the same parking lot as Home Depot). I have the Pad Thai, made spicy. My wife and daughter inhale their edemame. I likely isn't what you are after, but we prefer to eat there rather than any other Asian place we have found in Austin.

I know it is a chain, but I like PF Chang's best for more upscale Chinese - there is one downtown at 2nd and San Jacinto and another at the Arboretum.

I've lived in Bastrop the past five years, but when I lived in Austin there was a great place called 1st Wok on Stassney that was dirt cheap, delivers, and is delicious. Another good cheap place is Hao Hao in Dobie Mall (near UT), they also serve other Asian food.

OK, I know you probably have everything you need by now, but I just need to tell you...Hao Hao. I have lived in Austin my whole life, and I'd have to say Hao Hao is by far my favorite Chinese place. OK, so technically, Hao Hao is in round rock, but well worth it. Just follow 620 south to Round rock, it's right next to Austin driving school. This trip only takes a few minutes. (512) 447-8121. So Good! It's cheap, too only $5.49 for a buffet. They have a wonderful selection of menu items, all served hot and fresh, great service, and a good price. I'd go.

UPDATE: OK apparently, there are more of them than the one in rock rock...I think. well, anyways, great place.

When you say "authentic" do you mean "like they make in China"? Or do you mean "like they make at that place run by three Vietnamese women back home in Boston / New York / SF / Toronto"?

Try Hunan Lion in Brodie Oaks. Order the Seven Star Platter.
