Maybe he doesn't like to be touched. I had a cat that didn't like anyone patting him. After having him checked out by the vet and finding out that he was fine, I just gave him his space. I'd still play with him and talk with him and just treat him like you would a loving pet. After a couple years he became more approachable and finally he let people pet him and even started looking for the attention. Afterwards I just figured that since animals aren't born expecting another animal to do those things that maybe he was just mistrusting.

I miss him...

cats can actually detect our emotions through hands and even the slightest doubt or some restlessness, ur cat can pick it up from the palms of your hands. or you could try to look away from staring straight into your cats eyes, cats can see that as a threat, try to call it by name and wait for the cat's response. let it make the first contact, with that's done, should be no problem
maybe u could pet ur cat using the back of your hand, slowly from head to the back, remember don't stare...

Not enough info. How old is he? Is he feral (they consider touch threatening)? Did he have former owners (maybe they abused him)?

If he's still a kitten, just give him time. You have to be REALLY patient. Unlike dogs (who are pretty much ready to please you any 'ol way) cats are used to being independent and don't naturally trust people. But if you are gentle and patient he will come around.

Did you raise the cat from kitten age? The cat might of been abused, or it is just sensitive. Our cats sometimes act like crazy cats, they jump on you, and scratch you, even bite you. And we are good to them. I sometimes don't get it. But each cat is different I guess.

I had the same problem with one of my cats. I finally just ignored him, and let him come to me first for attention. He then slowly got used to being petted and knew he was not going to be hurt. I can now pet him anytime with no problems.
