Muslim Women oppressed? RDarling! You must read about my other blogs on my family and my husband. Muslim women are liberated! The work, they are mother's, wives, daughters and they are treated with dignity and respected by devout practicing Muslim man. If a man fears Allah he treats his wife with respect. Umkay! I AM A PRINCESS! I am treated like one every day! Then again my husband is a practicing Muslim man! People mix cultural with religious... because a man says he is Muslim it does not mean he is a practicing Muslim. Because a person says I am a Christian it does not automatically mean they practice the religion. Thus one's culture does not equate with one's religion.

I am a educated married mother of 4. I have a phD and I am well travelled ;therefore, i have been around so let me tell you, dont believe what you see on tv muslim women even in most muslim countries are not more or less oppressed then here in america. As a matter of fact, there are muslim countries were it is a norm for a woman to have at least one servant to help around the house. Also most of these women are educated some work and some dont.I hope that people can open their eyes and stop painting people with such a broad brush.

a happy muslim women
peace

I have lived here in the Middle East for four years now.

I have observed a great many things..... let me show you where you stand my Muslimah friend.

1) You have a computer, most of the Iraqi people I know don't have electricity they can depend upon. Only one has a computer, but no internet access.

2) You speak of a job, most of my Iraqi friends are proud of the family and do their very best for them. But they do not allow their wives, sisters, or daughters to venture far from home because of the constant threat of kidnapping.

3) You speak of being treated like a "princess", this is the most telling part of all........

You are probably one of a VERY small minority of Muslimahs that come from money and landed wealth. I will not go into how your family came to this, that is for you to look at more closely.

You do not represent the Muslimah population........ only a very lucky fraction of that group.

I don't know any not one. But i do have a cousin who is Protestant and can never leave her house without her partners permission and gets the life beaten out of her every time he's had a few too many. Women all over the world of different faiths and religions are oppressed and yes some Muslim ones but its more to do with what type of man they have in there life. Not that persons faith. Its what you accept as a woman and I'll never lay down and be any ones door mat, not as a Muslim, not as a woman and not as a human being.

I really don't know of any Muslim women that believe they are being oppressed everyday. But I do know through the newspaper cases of Muslim women as well as non-Muslim women living in Islamic countries that somehow broke the society's culture, rule of conduct, etc like walking alone, flirting, wearing some revealing cloths, etc. From that, they got very bad treatments from others, worse than treatment from other countries with more "liberal" society. The bad treatments I've came upon were cursing, teasing, stone-throwing, mocking, etc.

Unfortunately, one bad apple spoils the barrel. One man mistreats his wife and he happens to be Muslim, then people who do not understand (or want to understand) your faith automatically assume that all women are mistreated by Muslim men. I am so sorry that you and your family have hit this stereo-typing.

I don't think all Muslim women are oppressed, I think that some are in certain places, where fundamentalism and extremism are the rule.

I think this because I have seen the pictures and news reports of it. But, as for individuals I might meet or see or hear of, I would never assume that of someone I don't know for no reason.

Fatima isn't allowed to visit a non Muslim house or have non Muslim friends to her house unless her husband or grown sons are present. Alia was beaten by her husband because she gave him a daughter instead ofa son. Zainab was married off to a man she had never met, even though she wanted to stay in school and become a doctor. Saroush was forbidden to wear pants or a short skirt, even though her job was dangerous while wearing long skirts and sleeves. She was also not allowed to be out without her brother who beat her if she talked to a man about work.
