If I ask what you do for a living, I would really want to hear what you really do for a living.. your career. I want to hear why you are in that field and what about it interests you. I don't want to hear about your horrible boss or problems you are having at work. Don't spill all that until you're later in the relationship.

When I ask, I want to hear what kind of work do they do, what types of projects and stuff do they work on, if at all... it gives me an idea of his interests, which in turn tells me a litle bit about whether or not we share any common interests.
That said, I don't ask men that much - too fully absorbed in one man, I guess... lol... but it's a good conversation starter anyways.
And I know what you're getting at - no, not all women are looking for hints at your bank account. If that's what you're thinking, wait a while before meeting anyone new, because you already are negatively biased before even meeting the girl.

she wants to hear that youre one of the 10 richest guys in america, but thats not what she is going to hear.... tell her the TRUTH, if you are ashamed of what you do for a living, then maybe you should consider going back to school and getting a different, higher paying, more respected job... just a thought

all we want to hear is the truth. if you lie then we know u are not confident in what you do and that u are ashamed of your job. to me it is a turn off. there are some people who dont even make effort to work and so the fact that you have a job shows you are responsible!

She wants to hear something she can tell her friends without mumbling regardless of how much money you make.
My new boyfriend is a banker - acceptable to all other women even though he's only making $35K a year.
My new boyfriend is a mechanic - unacceptable even though good factory trained automotive technicians are making upwards of $65K per year.

I can't speak for all women ... but, when I ask a man what he does for a living, I'm usually inquiring as to whether or not he loves his job. If a person has to go to a job that they hate, it builds on them, in time, and makes the person irritable, unhappy and hard to live with. I, for one, wouldn't want to commit myself to a life-time of misery ... due to his discontent.

A mans profession says alot about him. Whether he's creative, smart, talented, strong, outgoing, etc. Not all jobs pay the same so if she wanted to know how much money you made she'd ask.
