What must occur before humans will stop relying on a belief in deities, spirits, invisible powers, etc.? Or will that darkness of thought always be upon us?
It has long been obvious that most (all?) religious beliefs can be traced back to a gross lack of knowledge about the planet and the life forms on it, as well as the universe in general. As recently as the founding of the US in the late 1700s, it was not generally accepted that rocks could fall from the sky, but now we accept meteorites as a simple fact. Must a certain number of generations pass with a sufficiently-high level of knowledge before religion is scrapped? Or will science always take a back seat to closed minds of the type who claim that dinosaurs never existed and dinosaur bones were placed there by the devil to confuse us?
Will critical thought ever win out, or will we always be burdened by belief in the Bible, psychics, Feng Shui, horoscopes, and every other scrap of imaginative nonsense?

Today's major religions probably won't be abandoned until different systems come along to replace them - systems that have more practical appeal to the masses. It would be wonderful if such new systems were based on reason.
My answer is based on consideration of how some religions of the past died out. The ancient Greek and Roman religions (known today as mythology) were actually real religions in their day, with various gods and ceremonies. They were largely unstructured and widely inconsistent compared to the prominent monotheistic religions today. Many of the gods and rituals were completely different from one town to another, or even one person to another. And religion was much less of a distinct industry lead by professionals like most religions are today.
Their gods were not totally abandoned until xtianity came along. Thus, because there was little leadership, and so many different gods, cults, and ceremonies, it was relatively easy for a new centrally organized religion to take hold. When it comes to major cultural institutions such as religion, law, and education, humans seem to be naturally drawn to the more structured versions. There is also the natural animal herding tendancy, even in humans, to follow the crowd. So xtianity, which preached a relatively consistent message to large groups, was helped along by the fact that people like to congregate with other people who think and act like them.
And lastly, the most successful religions seem to have key viral aspects, whether or not they were intentionally designed for that purpose. The Catholic rules against birth control results in many more Catholics. Mormons' polygamy practices also foster growth. Many Christian sects have mandatory proselytizing, etc. It's hard for a different kind of cultural institution to compete with such viral forces.

Actually the bible has a lot of science to it, If you studied the Word you would find intelligence beyond the thinking for that day. It could have only been revealed by it's creator. We has humans will never stop searching for a higher power, what ever that may be to you. The bible says that Eternity is written on the heart of every man, even if science is your religion even being an atheist requires faith. So we will never stop searching for that something, I am glad I know and that I confidence on where I will be spending that eternity, Heaven. If you are truly interested and asking with an open mind I would do some research on the matter, there is a good book called "Evidence that demands a verdict" Interesting. If you are really open minded you would go to a Christian bookstore and browse. Just a thought

Religion can never be abandoned , knowledge alone does not guarantee to generate good morality. It can be clearly seen from the world today. The more educated a person is will result in the depreciation of morality. Mainly because no knowledge is able to educate our "desire" except religion. The wild spread of HIV aids throughout the world is the result of disbelieving in the religion . There is no other way except to put us back onto the right track to follow the guidance of the Almighty. For those who wished that religions should be abandoned because they don't like to be restricted in whatever they do. Simply because they love devils more than God. Nevertheless doing evil really enjoyable but have you ever thought of God's severe punishments in the life after death, no human can ever endure it.

Never, but false religion and man's errant ways will someday come to an end.
God is! Therefore belief in spirit and the spirit world will only grow stronger as we approach the end of this age and the dawning of a new age (called the millenium) where Jesus will at last reveal the true God to us and live with us here on earth.
Maranatha! Come quickly Lord Jesus!

The answer to that question will determine whether or not mankind is able to evolve and advance into the next step of a truly intelligent and peaceful civilization or whether we're doomed to die out as a civilization of hate and war. If there are beings older and more advanced than ours somewhere in the universe you can bet they also had to overcome the burden and delusion of religion.

Not sure when, but it is a prophecy that there will be very few people of faith in the end times, so rejoice, if you find that sort of news good news. To me, it's just sad to have the mystery of life solved with all certainty. Why pick apart a flower to see how it works? Can't you just enjoy the flower as it is?

False knowledge will continue to exist in a small number of immature people who refuse to learn.
The great majority of mature mankind will concentrate on building the world civilization for future generations.

Then how do you explain all the miracles I have witnessed first hand?
Basically, you are asking "when is everybody going to see things my way?"
I bet you tell people you are open minded.

As long as there is the tiniest trace of delirium, religion will still exist.
