A standard requires an agreed upon and quantifiable measure. What are the units of measure for machinability, formability, or weldability? Can you get everyone to agree?

Think about defining terms like smooth, flexible, or hot. Smooth for glass would be very different from smooth for asphalt. Flexible steel rods would require a much different standard than flexible cotton thread. Hot for human body temperature might be 100 degrees F, while hot for lava might be several thousand degrees.

Some have tried to establish standards for such vague characteristics. A good example is the Mohs scale for hardness of minerals, with talc as a 1 and diamond as a 10. But, this kind of thing is less a standard than a rough comparison.
