.pps and .ppt are Microsoft PowerPoint file extensions. PowerPoint is a program that is used to make slide-show-like presentations. You would need to install PowerPoint (usually as a part of Microsoft Office) in order to view these files. Unfortunately you will need to purchase this software and it isn't exactly cheap.
There is another option, which is to install the open-source equivalent known as OpenOffice. This is free to download and is really a very good set of office programs. Go to www.openoffice.org to get more info and to download.

A .pps file is a Power Point presentation file. You can download a free copy of the software that you need from www.openoffice.org
(which is opensource or in the public domain software package)

Always ensure the emails are from trusted people and have been virus checked. In case of doubt -Do not open them!

I'm pretty sure a .pps extension is a power point file. If you don't own a copy of power point, then you can download a power point viewer for free--you can't edit the file, but you can look at it.
The power point viewer is at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=428D5727-43AB-4F24-90B7-A94784AF71A4&displaylang=en
