Should I consider a career of some sort in religious studies?

Question

Religion fascinates me a lot because there are so many of them, and they are all similar, yet different. I think it's human reaction that gets me because people are drawn into it like flies to a lamp, no only in negative ways but positive ways. I'm not christian or any other religion at all either.

Only if you don't care about "making money" should you consider this as a career.

I have friends who have studied greek, hebrew, etc because they are fasinated with faith. But...there are no JOBS for people who are fasinated with faith. A few teaching positions. More jobs for people who are pastors/rabbi's really. But not for people like me and (I think) you who are interested in it in a more intellectual way. I continue to be fasinated by humans...fasination with it :) I hope you've read Dawkins book - the one in the bestseller list currently. He has a lot of interesting theories about "why" we're fasinated and he talks in analogies of "moths and flames" as you do :)

Have you thought about anthropology? It has to do with the study of different cultures which would include religion and the impact it has on a society or group of people.

Only if you believe there is the call of God in your heart and mind to go in this direction. If there is no internal call in your heart and you go forward anyway you will do more damage than good.
